Tales of Origin: Sumatra

Tales of Origin: Sumatra

Beyond the Typical Sumatran Cup

Sumatra, a region known for its bold, earthy coffees and the unique Giling Basah (Wet-Hulled) processing method, delivers something entirely unexpected with this month’s Specialty Estate release. This washed-process coffee from Aceh presents a vibrant and clean flavor profile, distinct from the traditional savory and herbaceous Sumatran cup. With floral, citrus, and jammy notes, this coffee exemplifies the versatility of the region and the dedication of its farmers.

A Glimpse into Aceh: The Heart of Sumatran Coffee

Nestled in the northern reaches of Sumatra, the Aceh region is a treasure trove for coffee cultivation. Surrounded by the lush Barisan Mountains, Aceh’s volcanic soil and rainforest climate provide the perfect environment for growing high-quality coffee. Farms here average just one hectare in size, and 80% of the producers are women—a remarkable testament to the role of women in the local coffee industry.

Lake Toba, the world’s largest volcanic lake, is a striking feature of this landscape, further enriching the soil and creating unique microclimates for coffee cultivation. Coffee farms in Aceh are interwoven with shade trees like banana, jackfruit, and avocado, adding both biodiversity and depth to the coffee’s flavour.

The Craftsmanship of Putra Gayo Mill

At the centre of this coffee’s story is Iwannitosa Putra, owner of the Putra Gayo Mill. Known for producing exceptional washed and natural coffees, the mill services over 1,500 smallholder farmers. These farmers deliver cherries to the mill, where they are processed with meticulous care. Washed coffees, a rarity in Sumatra due to the humid climate, undergo 10–12 hours of fermentation and 10 days of drying on raised beds. This slow, deliberate process ensures the coffee’s vibrant flavour and clean profile.

Washed Coffees in Sumatra: A Rare Treat

While Wet-Hulled coffees dominate the Sumatran coffee scene due to their efficiency in the rainy climate, washed coffees like this one represent a labour-intensive, high-quality alternative. The Putra Gayo Mill’s commitment to washed processing reflects a dedication to quality and innovation, pushing the boundaries of what Sumatran coffee can be.

This process preserves the coffee’s bright acidity and fruit-forward flavours, allowing the natural characteristics of the Ateng, Bor Bor, Catimor, and Timor varieties to shine. The result is a cup that is both surprising and delightful—a testament to the region’s potential beyond its traditional profile.

The Sumatran Experience in Every Sip

This Specialty Estate release offers a fresh perspective on Sumatran coffee. Its floral notes, mild jammy citrus, and cooked berry flavours create a cup that is both approachable and complex. With each sip, you’re transported to the volcanic slopes of Aceh, where dedicated farmers and meticulous processing converge to create something truly special.

Whether you’re a seasoned coffee aficionado or simply curious about exploring new flavours, this coffee is a must-try. It’s a rare glimpse into the versatility and excellence that Sumatra has to offer—proof that even in a region famed for its earthy coffees, there’s always something new to discover.
